This picture was taken at Pepperdine University, downtown campus, winter of 1971. My sister Renee sent it to me. This isn't the longest my hair grew but it's the only picture I have of me with long hair. My family might have one or two others around someplace - hidden probably. When I left for Pepperdine in September I just started letting it grow. I wasn't a hippie or anything (too conservative in politics to be a hippie), I just wanted to look cool and exert my independence. When I got back in April after my first year, I cut it. I wanted to work for the summer and earn money for a car. Back then long hair on a young man just wasn't accepted in the workplace. I got a job at McDonalds. Maybe I'll see if my family has any pictures of my first car (1964 Corvair Monza. What a car!). What do you think Jel? Do I look good in long hair?

I kind of like the long hair. its more acceptable today day. I think the church would like you with long hair...haha

I have "big hair" picture AND with a wide collar purple shirt and bell bottoms :)
Trey, I'll check and see if I have any pictures of you with longer hair and maybe I'll put them on a post together and we'll see how they compare.

My first car was a 64 Corvair also.
I think you like a relative on Tom Cruise in the early years. Glad you have a whole different theology. :)

I had a 1962 Corvair coupe. Dual carbs, air cooled six cylinder engine. Four speed. Great little car.

Tom Cruise? I'm going to have to get pictures and compare. Plus he's a lot shorter than I am (and a lot richer too)
My dream is that when I retire (yeh right) I can get a tour guide job at an historic site where I can dress like the people of old and can wear my hair long once again.
Jel, never got my hair "hang down to the middle of your back" long but I did let it grow longer than this. I was able to put it into a pony tail of sorts (a short pony tail). This was my two years of hair independence.
So, I suppose it would be correct to say that all young men go through the "long hair" stage. My 15 and 16 year olds have grown theirs out and it's driving me crazy.

Paula, yes, I think it's something most guys go through. My brother's was a very long phase, but not all are, I don't think. My husband simply didn't cut his hair or shave when he was at HUF. But that was the extent of his long-hair phase. The question is -- can the mother handle it or will she let it drive her crazy??
Lisa, it seems your mom and dad took it better with Trey than Grandy and I did with your Uncle Jim, at least in high school. His first year in college, he got an afro on his beautiful wavy hair which bothered me more than any long hair he might have had. Paula is correct that parents go through some stage of hair rebellion with their boys. But "it, too, shall pass," or I thought so until Bob's claim of a deep desire to have that long hair to keep clean and out of his eyes. There is nothing more disgusting than to see a man with dirty, stringy, unkempt hair - especially with a balding top. Nana/Jeanne
