Ned and I are both history and trivia buffs, so my guess is that you were born seven years earlier than I was.

Am I right? :)

Keep guessing. Neva, I'm not sure what year you were born in so I'm not sure if you are right or not.

Trey and preacherman are off but in the right decade.

James first reaction was, "I didn't know Mary Steenburgen was that old!"

His guess is that you are 50 born in 57.

My guess is that you are 52 born in 55.

Kathy made that sound like I thought you both were old, I just lose track of time.

James, I thought Mary Steenburgen was older than I but I was wrong (isn't the first time). I am 54 years old born in 1953.

As a member of the Mount Dora congregation, I think the picture is in VERY POOR TASTE!

Bob Bliss said...

Dear Anonymous member of Mt. Dora, I'm sorry you find the picture in poor taste. It was from the movie, From Here To Eternity. Since the picture is 54 years old I didn't think it would raise that much of a stink. I hope you will feel comfortable revealing your feelings to me personally.

Anonymous said...

So, because it is from a movie, that makes it okay? Were there not any movies made 54 years ago that had non pornographic scenes that could have been used to make your point? And, you "didn't think it would raise 'that' much of a stink. How much of a stink did you think it would raise? If you thought it would raise even a little "stink", how wise do you think it was to use the picture? I'm afraid I just do not understand the logic.

I'll admit that the photo was a bit racy in its day but hardly pornographic (at least in my viewpoint). Back in the 50s pornography was still prosecuted. If I thought it was pornography I wouldn't have used it much less looked at it. It was a major movie and box office hit with major stars. The reason I used it was because it was such a well known picture and movie poster. Back then stars of their caliber would not have been in anything that was even close to pornographic. I'm sorry my logic is different than yours, perhaps it's just because of my background and the way I was raised. I will try to be more selective in the future. I don't claim to be perfect in my view of things and I certainly don't want to offend those I serve. If I need to adjust the way I see things then I will do so.

You evidently aren't willing to adjust very much since the picture is still there. Don't bother to reply to this comment because I will not see it. I am not a regular reader of blogs and only looked at this one because someone who does read them called me and told me to look at what our preacher had put on his blog. I'm done.

Anonymous, reveal yourself and we'll talk face to face.

Bob,
I am not a part of your denomination but found your blog a few weeks ago while doing a "blog search". I have found it to be very interesting on a number of different levels. This latest conversation I found to be especially interesting. As a Pastor myself, I found your responses to be a bit unwise. As a public servant we have to deal with many different opinions. Yet, the best response is always to have a meek and contrite spirit. Next time may I suggest you simply apologize and promptly remove the picture. It will make your tenure however brief it sounds like it might be, much more pleasant.
And thanks for the insights you offer, I find your perspective very "non-church-of-christ" like. Which is refreshing for a change.

Jake,
Thanks for your comments. When confronted I tend to be a little overly defensive. I thought I was being apologetic and stating that even though the picture didn't violate my sense of propriety that I was willing to adjust. Actually I didn't think of deleting the picture as an olive branch to my anonymous commenter. It's not that I was being obstinate but that I just didn't think about it. I thought we were involved in a conversation and I at least wanted the commenter to acknowledge that I put the picture up innocently enough. After their last comment I guess I got a little overly irritated when I found out they came by this through a telephone conversation with someone else in the congregation. I would hope that my congregation believes in the process that Jesus outlines in Matthew 18:15-17. If the first person who saw the picture and was offended (or at least thought it inappropriate for me to have used it) would have come directly to me and told me of their concern over the picture, the story would have ended there. Over the years in my full time ministry the congregations I have served have found that I am a reasonable fellow. As you can see now I have deleted the picture. I would hope that my anonymous commenter will come to me so that we can talk. I will apologize for violating their sense of propriety and I will promise to try to be careful in the future.

Bob,
There is no question as to how Christians should handle these situations. Yet, no matter the denomination, people are people. As you know, dealing with such situations is one of the challenges of being a public servent. I hope you took my comments in the spirit intended and know that I truly understand why you responded in such a way. Yet, sometimes we need someone from outside the situation to remind us of how things appear.

Jake,
Yes I appreciate your comments very much. I know that you are right in what you say. Unfortunately we preachers sometimes have a bad day and respond poorly. I know that my defensive posture can be misunderstood as resistance to doing the right thing. I don't mean it to be that way but I understand how it can be seen in that way. Your gentle insights have made me aware of my need to seek forgiveness from this member in my congregation. If that member does again come to my blog I would hope that they will acknowledge they have forgiven me - whether they reveal to me who they are or not.
